What's Inside Your Mattress?

Knowing what’s inside of a mattress will help you to make an informed decision when choosing your next bedding purchase.

Let’s face it, when you walk into a mattress store it’s hard to know what to look for when you have only a few minutes to lie down on a variety of beds. But there’s a lot to discover just by looking at the mattress label and asking questions.

Every component in a mattress performs a specific function, and if those components are sub quality then your mattress will not support your body correctly or feel comfortable over time.

Conventional mattresses are often stuffed with petroleum based polyurethane foam that can release, or “off-gas,” volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that have been linked to cancer, allergies, asthma and harm to nervous systems and children’s development. These chemicals include toxic fire retardants that migrate into the air we breathe.

We encase all our mattresses and pillow top pads in covers made from 100% organic cotton quilted to natural wool, which is a natural temperature regulating fiber that keeps humidity levels low.

Polyesters, polyurethanes, memory foams and any vapor barriers such as vinyl or plastic (air beds) also inhibit the movement of moisture away from the body, creating a humid sleep environment. As body heat and moisture build up, your heart rate increases, which can elevate blood pressure and cause shallower sleep.

Cheaply made polyurethane foam also lacks durability. It quickly compresses and forms uncomfortable body impressions. (You know the two dips with a hump in the middle?)

European Sleep Design uses only all-natural Talalay latex (from the rubber tree) in our mattresses. Natural Talalaly latex has superior resiliency and airflow, is inherently anti-bacterial, mold and mildew resistant. We encase all our mattresses and pillow top pads in covers made from 100% organic cotton quilted to natural wool, which is a natural temperature regulating fiber that keeps humidity levels low. This can dramatically improve the quality of your sleep. In addition, European Sleep Design mattress components come with an Oeko-Tex 100 certification. That means our beds are non-toxic and contain no harmful chemicals.
